Cavanaugh O’Leary was born in Houston, Texas, but he and his family moved to Aspen in
April 2001. He is an attorney licensed in Texas and Colorado and practiced law in Houston,
specializing in mergers and acquisitions as well as oil and gas law. After moving, he continued to
practice law in Aspen at a local firm for several years and then left the law practice to pursue
other interests.
Cavanaugh is an active member of the Aspen community and, after leaving the law practice,
dedicated himself to helping others in need. For over fifteen years, he was a member of
Mountain Rescue Aspen, and was its vice president, treasurer and a board member for four years
and legal counsel. In 2009, Cavanaugh obtained his EMT-Intermediate, an advanced life support
certification, and worked part-time for Aspen Ambulance. For over ten years, he was a volunteer
ambulance medic at Cruz Roja Mexicana in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, which runs the
ambulance service for San Miguel and over 500 outlying, rural communities in its district. In
addition, he has been a member of their Consejo (board of directors) for over six years.
Cavanaugh was a board member of the Aspen Medical Foundation for a number of years, and for
the last six years, he has been a board member of the Aspen Hope Center.
Cavanaugh has been married to his wife, Blanca, for over forty years. They have one son,
Cavanaugh III “Cav,” who lives in Los Angeles. He enjoys fly fishing, spending time with
Blanca at their home in San Miguel and collecting Mexican folk art made by the masters of their
craft.
